Environmental Offsets – What Are They?
Environmental offsets are a simple way to create a greener world. Basically, they empower people like you to support awesome green projects making our world a better place. When you buy an offset you are funding a sustainability project, and in doing so offsetting the negative environmental impact of your actions. (Unfortunately, no matter how green we are we still impact the planet.)
Did you fly to Greenland and want to offset the carbon footprint of the plane ride? You can buy offsets and support a reforestation project to suck up the CO2. Did you produce and sell 1,000 artisanal dog mittens? You can buy offsets and support a carbon recapture program to compensate for the environmental damage brought on by the mittens.
These days there are several different kinds of environmental offsets. There are carbon offsets (probably the most famous), renewable energy certificates, and even water restoration certificates. (We’ll explain these in more detail below.) Each of these is a bit different, but the basic idea is the same: empowering people to offset their personal or professional environmental impact by supporting green projects.
At My Green Marketplace we really like the idea of environmental offsets so we’ve decided to integrate them into our store. We talk about this in more detail on our Mission page, but the basic idea is that we invest 40% of our profits into offsets. That means that whenever you shop with us you are offsetting the environmental impact of the shopping process and creating a positive net impact. We think that this is a pretty cool idea and want to make a green marketplace for responsible people like you. If you do too than please shop with us, tell your friends about us, like us on Social Media, watch our videos, and help us grow. We think that if we work together we can build something really great.
A carbon offset is a certificate representing a one metric ton reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. If you have a green project that decreases carbon emissions by one ton you can apply for an offset to get compensated. This process helps ensure that green projects have enough funding to grow and thrive. There are all kinds of projects that do this. A dairy farm may want to install a machine to capture and destroy methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. These machines are expensive so the farm can use carbon offsets to help pay the price for the machine. Everybody wins. (Even the cows if you get my drift…)
Renewable Energy Certificates
A renewable energy certificate represents a megawatt-hour of renewable electricity that is generated and delivered to the power grid. Companies that create energy without burning fossil fuels can apply to receive compensation via the certificates. As is the case with carbon offsets, renewable energy certificates provide green projects with the funding they need to grow, thrive and compete in the marketplace.
Water Restoration Certificates
A Water restoration certificate represents 1,000 gallons of restored water. The certificates provide farmers, ranchers, and other heavy water users with a powerful incentive to utilize more efficient methods that decrease their water needs. If they decrease their water usage they can apply for a water restoration certificate and receive funding. Just like with the carbon offsets and renewable energy certificates, they help organizations to go green.
Where Do We Get Our Environmental Offsets and What Projects Do We Support?
We get our offsets from TerraPass. They really know the offsets business and thoroughly vet all of the companies and organizations applying for them.
In terms of what specific projects we support. Stay tuned and we will begin uploading information about all of the great green projects you support when you shop at My Green Marketplace. Also, check the video below for some more background on environmental offsets.
